First 3 VIN Position's - World manufacturer identifier
1FA — Ford, USA, passenger car
1FD — Ford, USA, incomplete vehicle
Fourth VIN Position - restraint system type code
L — Active safety belts — all positions, first generation air bags.
F — Active safety belts — all positions, second generation air bags.
Fifth through Seventh VIN positions indicate vehicle line, series and body type
P40 — Two-door coupe.
P44 — Two-door convertible.
P42 — Two-door coupe, GT.
P45 — Two-door convertible, GT.
P46 — Two-door convertible, Cobra.
P47 — Two-door coupe, Cobra.
Eighth VIN position is the engine displacement and number of cylinders code.
V — 4.6L, EFI (DOHC), eight cylinder.
X — 4.6L, EFI (SOHC), eight cylinder.
4 — 3.8L, EFI, six cylinder.
Ninth VIN position is the check digit code (0-9)
Tenth VIN position is the model year code
Y — 2000
Eleventh VIN position is the assembly plant code
S — Pilot Plant, Allen Park, Michigan (USA).
F — Dearborn, Michigan (USA).
Last six VIN positions are the production sequence number

RE: Engine VIN code X?
There's a lot of discrepancy as to whether the engine code denotes a Windsor or a Romeo block. I've heard all 99-00 GT's had Windsor blocks, but I haven't found any evidence of this. An easy check is to count the driver's side cam cover bolts - 11 bolts means a Windsor, 9 (I think) means a Romeo.
