Default Help me build a 408stroker w/ PAW book

Hello guys,

I have a kit car that is just about done except for the engine and trans. It is set up for a 351W. I want to put a 408 stroker in it for HP and streetability. Target is 450-500 HP.

I have a PAW (performance auto warehouse) book infront of me right now. Is there anyone on this forum willing to guide me through the process of how to go about putting this engine together?

If you are curious the car is a FFR (factory five racing) car. roughly 2,000 lbs, 3:55 rear end, changed the four bolt pattern on the reaar end and front end to 5 lug on the wheels, 17" kumo wheels. Please don't suggest anything other than some sort of 351w stroker becasue the car is set up for it and any other engine combo would require modifications and would be a big head ache. I'm trying to save some money by not going with a crate engine. I have an engine builder down here who is willing to help me put the parts together.

I would recommend you take a look at Summit Racing for Ford Racing Performance Parts as they carry lots of them at good prices. so does www.holcombmotorsports.com. www.coasthigh.com makes good kits for stroker applications like yours. you could also call the Ford racing parts hot line at 586-468-1356 and ask them for some suggestions as to what parts will work best for what you plan to do with the car. good luck with it by the way.

Thanks for the info Roundman. There is so much to consider it is unreal and being a bit older and wiser I'll follow the advice of those more experienced.

PAW used to be good to deal with but not anymore, something has changed there in the past 2-3 years.......

crank= 4.00 stroke
Rods= 6.250 legnth
Pistons= 408 stroker costum made
351w block clearanced and .030 over

and thats it, does not matter what brand get what you can afford and in the HP range you want dont over spend and deffanetly dont under spend.

www.catpep.com makes really nice crank and rods that are affordible and to meet almost any application, check them out.

Thanks for the info. I don't want to get too radical with it. I'd be more than happy with 500hp

I was thinking about victor jr intake to keep the torque down in the low RPM range to help the tires hook up. What are your thoughts?

I currently have a stock 85 351W with a 4 barrel carb.....I just found a 1969 block that I'll do a rebuild with. The deck height is a little lower with the 69s but it looks like performance parts are available for either block. When I title the car the 69 engine will be going in so that I can title it as a 69.

I've also thought about doing a 392 stroker instead for reliability issues. I'm also thinking about a 392 b/c I'm thinking that a 392 isn't that far from the 408 and the HP / TQ ratings are about the same. I just don't want the engine to blow up and I'm stuck with a pile of junk.

Coast High Performance owns stroker kits. They are one of the best if not THE best company to go to for strokers.
