I had mine done by a pro. I ain't worth a chit when it comes to body reparir, and they took the hood, fenders, doors and trunk lid off to paint them, then reassembled. I don't know how you would get under the hood and under the trunk lid without taking them off to repaint them.

 

Putting a car together after it is painted is very hard. Unless you have experience doing it and are prepared to do some spot painting I think it is best to paint the car once it is assembled.

 

OK, but that is not how the pros do it.

 

Have you made it back to the Springs yet, would love to see the car up close. Gives me too many ideas for my 68.

I saw these guys on overhaulin' using blue masking tape on the panels where they touched as they were lining things up and adjusting stuff - it looked like you would have to be very careful and probably as good as they were. Whenever we painted cars before, we would take the doors, trunk, hood off to paint the jams and shoot the inside of the fenders, etc. we would then put the panels back on to paint the exterior as a whole - feel like I would get better consistency of color.

I won't be to the Springs until about March of 08. I still need to do one deployment, come back to San Diego, sell my house and then get my stuff packed and move.Seems like it is coming up soon though.

I'm no expert, but you should paint vertical panels in a vertical position, if not it won't look very good with some paints. Perhaps it has to do with how the flecks orient or somethin'.
