ive been looking to get a cold air intake, are they really all pretty much the same, i keep hearing about densecharger, wheres the best place to buy from? i have a 99 gt

 

densecharger is really similar to K&N, although I'd rather have the densecharger. Both are above and beyond a cheap eBay CAI by leaps and bounds (performance wise). Neither will give you neck snapping accelleration, but 4 or 5 hp from a Densecharger would be expected

 

i got ebay cai for 43 bucks. i dont see why i need to spend an extra 100 bucks for a couple horsepower. (3-4hp, 4-5ft./lbs. torque to be expected) you may get a couple more here or there for different brands, but not to be expected, just better response throughout the rpm range.

 

Densecharger made a significant difference for me. I wouldn't go any other way. Even if you get the ebay one, you'll probably kick yourself for not going with the densecharger. It's worth saving up for if money is an issue. I got my densecharger with filter, full pipe, connectors, (and carbon fiber appearence package) all the way up to the throttle body including an 85mm Pro M Racing MAM all for $200 on Ebay.

 

Do with the densecharger. Its a much better buy than a ebay CAI. You can find them at www.tunableinduction.com

 

Not trying to rain on anyone's parade, but, they really should referr to the CAIs as Hot Air Intakes, unless it's a completely enclosed unit made of some kind of thermoplastic.
A more suitable set-up would be a ram-air type system with outside air entering through the cowl (by the windshield), or the air entering from the lower front spoiler area.
I don't have any data to support my theory, but it just seems like more underhood heat would enter through that open conical filter than any "cooler air", which can't be good for performance.
But even in a fully enclosed ram-air system, the air entering is only as cool as the outside air temperature, and whether or not how fast you're rolling.
So, if you're going for a CAI anyway, might as well buy the cheapest one.[sm=goodidea.gif]

Don't forget to create a path for the outside air to enter the CAI also...like removing any silencer from inside the fenderwell etc...hell, get creative, fab up a home-made air entry, and make sure all underhood air is completely closed off, it couldn't hurt.[sm=smiley20.gif]

A densecharger is fully seperated from the engine bay and is in the bumper/fender well which is open to the outside air at all times. And by the way, its made of plastic so by your description, it is a cold air intake.
