gt40 heads on 302 help
hi everyone, im thinking about getting a set of gt40s off of an old explorer to put on my 302. i was justwondering:
1.will the bolts used on the 302 heads fit the gt40s or do i need special bolts to adapt the two.
2. ive heard that you can just use a 351 gasket on the 302, and its ok to block the extra holes. is that so? (if it even applies to the gt40s)
any information is much apreciated

They should both be 7/16" head bolts, but if you have TTY(torque to yield) head bolts you can NOT reuse them. As far as a gasket, I haven't heard anything about that, doesn't mean it's not true though, but on my 302 I use Fel Pro 1011-2. Also be sure if you have GT40's or GT40P's, the P heads will require a different headers, or modification of the headers you got.

yeah the P's will say P on the corners near the head bolt holes. also the regular 40's are a F3 casting number and the P's are like F7 or something like that.
you'll want to use an early 351w intake gasket, and yeah there are extra holes in the gasket but you should be putting permatex around the entire water jacket anyways, which seals off that extra hole in the gasket from being able to leak. gt40/gt40p/302/351w head gaskets and exhaust gaskets are all the same, but the spark plug angle of the P's are what makes them hard to work with unless you have headers specific to the P heads.
lastly, if you score a set from an exploder your looking for 95-97.5 for the 40's and 97.5 and newer for the P's - and you need to get about .030 milled off the deck of the regular 40's to bring them into spec with the 40's used on the 93-95 cobras
