Default sliding cover for automatic shifter

My wife got into her 94 Mustang GT (5.0L V8 automatic) and she said the shifter was sticking to get it out of park so she pushed harder. It works great now, nice and smooth :-), but the little plastic cover that slides back and forth with the shifter is gone. The piece behind the shifter is there in the slot and I can see it is torn off. In front of the shifter there is an openinginto the gearbox. Can I get a replacement piece of plastic for this and is it easy to replace? Should I worry about the missing piece that might have fallen into the gearbox?

Don't worry about somting falling inside of the trans, there sealed up. As for plastic replacement, yes. Contact the dealer and they will have a new shifter cover for you..

Thanks for the reply. We just got the car. I guess I should get a repair manual too. What's best? Dealer manual or some aftermarket like Chiltons?

Ok, I got the part from Ford. It's the whole automatic shifter cover. I ordered a service manual but don't have one yet. I saw the haynes manual at the local B&N, but it wasn't very clear. The relevant section for removing the center console said to "pry out" the piece around the console shifter. Thre is a smooth black plastic section overlaying the shifter cover (which is also smooth black), then around that there is a sort of frame which is rough (like leather). I can see the open seam around this rough black piece so I assume that is what I'm supposed to pry out. Can anyone offer a better description of how to remove it?

thanks,

-steve
