I can only imagine the power/torque curve man I bet it would be enough to keep me happy. Thats why I've been back and forth so many times between the two motors.

Yea I already factored that into my build cost. Id go with a Boss block and see how far I could push it bore/stroke wise safely in a 10-15lb boosted application. Id go with an aftermarket block on the 408 too just because id like to do it right the first time and I too already concidered that into my costs. I figure as far as a 331 or a 408 goes I can build either one for close to the same cost . Then obviouslycost me a few grand more for a blower on the 331down the road.

Huge heads, cam and intake doesn't scare me. But the ease of swapping pulleys and/or a head unit is pretty attractive. Thanks for the help I gained a much clearer idea what it takes to make that kind of power with a 408. I think its going to come down to how much power I really want and to be honest I think with the chassis mods I intend to do being ablehook up pretty much all the power a 408 like this could put out would be plenty ha.

I just put a 408 together here is what I did

1986 351w block bored .30 overstroked to 408(no access to 69-74 block)
Victor Jr heads 210cc intake ports70cc chambers making 11:1 compression 2.05 intake 1.60 exhaust valves
Victor Jr Intake port matched to heads
Holly 950cfm 4150 carb
Doug Herbert Solid Roller cam .644 .643 290/302 @ .50 RPM range 3500-7200
Crane Cams Solid Roller lifters
Hardend pushrods
Scorpion roller rockers
1.6 7/16"studs with stud girdles
Eagle Forged steel crank
Eagle H beam rods
SRP-5ccpistons
ARP studs and bolts in heads, mains, androds
Bottom end fully balanced by Eagle
Melling High Performance oil pump (not high volume)
MSD 6AL ignition box
MSD Blaster 2 coil
MSD 8.5mmwires
MSD distributor
Hooker Super Comp Headers1 3/4" into 3" collectors

This thing feels like itseasly putting down over 500 horses on 93 octaneand its not even closeto being fully tuned. But it cost me alot of money to make it do that. Putting itto the pavementthrough a fully built T-5 from astro performance.I have 245/50/16s on the back andsheburns them off in 1st, 2nd, 3rd at 3500 rpm, and 4th will spin if i go over a little bump on the road over 3500rpms. I have 4:10 gears in the rear.

Sounds good, seems you have no problem driving it on the street with the solid roller? I think it would be over kill to go 331+blower when all I want is a solid mid-low 10sec drag radial car with 500rwhp or a lil more. Money isn't an issue im a patient man and have saved a ton of cash since I wrecked my 04 GT close to a year ago (so glad I did haha, what a waste of money that car was high payments, high insurance + a few grand in mods = gayness). Biggest thing is I want to be able to run pump gas and It seems it should be no big deal to do so especially if I invested money into some nice ported heads.

Power is going to come from true 7,000 rpm power band.
Need big haeds to keep up with that.

Only down side is the idle is going to be pretty rough
and you have to run pretty low gears.

If you want big thump'n high compression idle, then its perfect.
I love the sound of huge durration high compression engine thump'n away

You could go with 331+turbo and get same power but run
3.73 gears and have fairly mild idle.

Either works the 331-TT would just be a little quieter, lol

Quiet......who wants that? Haha...I know you're going turbo and your car will surely be sick so im just joking. I don't mind a hardcore na motor, like stated before it will be driven rarely on the street and only for short durations. I got to thinking and since I would go with an aftermarket block no matter which route I take, whats the biggest you can punch/stroke a 351 Dart block for instance before it becomes too stressed. Just educating myself as much as possible before I make a decision here.

there is no need to punch it that much. why punch it out that much that when it comes to rebuild you just wasted around 2500 bucks?

i would do around 427 though. i think a max effort dart block can go to like 47x something
