Default Hello

Hi i am new this is my first thread. Me and my dad are building a mustang together and i burned up my c4 transmission. I have a 351w with aluminum heads cam vic jr intake sorry i dont know better specs of the engine. But we are puting in a temporary c6 transmission to hopefully get the summer out of it but we are running into problems.

my main issue is the cross member cant be put in because it hits the transmission pan on the drivers side. The c6 was taken out of a 302 ford box truck not a big block.

very surprisingly i had no clearance issues with the tunnel. But i have looked on summit for a custom cross member but i have had no luck.

Let me know what you guys think. =)

Thanks!

Just cut it and make it work. I put a 4R70W in mine, had an new T-5 crossmember laying about that I was going to use for my old setup but never got around to it, so I cut that into 3 pieces, bolted the middle piece to the trans, jacked the tranny to where it needed to be, bolted the other two pieces to the body (the slips on the side weren't welded in so I was able to slide it back and forth in the mount) then tacked it, took it out and welded it. Voila, custom cross-member.

Yeah i was trying to avoid cutting and welding but as a last resort thats deff the best option. thanks a lot man =). I actually have the old cross member out of the truck maybe i can make some thing happen using that and my cross member.

Don't worry about cutting it, the cross-members a cheap like dirt. I bought that T-5 member a year or two ago, and I think it only cost me $75 shipped, and a much higher quality than the stock one, as, you have probably noticed if yours is still the original one, they rust out at the mounts, almost every one I've seen is rusted out there. Factory one had what looked like duct-work gauge for metal there, the new one is about a 1/4" thick-walled tube, so rust will never be an issued. Came with bushings and everything too.

Just gotta remember, trans crossmember doesn't really do too much, all it's really doing is holding the tranny up, engine mounts deal with all the torque. Some old vehicles just had a small pipe and one bolt holding the tranny up. At that, remember, it is what it is when you're trying to get stuff into a car that was never meant to be, if it don't work, make it

Haha thank you. I'm a mechanic so I deal with all this crap all day long :\ So you pick up a few things along the way.

Assuming you looked at the car domain page there? I haven't touched that in a couple years, car isn't like that at all anymore I'll go take a few of the new and improved Fox body for ya as I just got this thing running again about 2 or 3 weeks ago, been working on this swap for over a year, probably about a year and a half. Took it to the track with the 5.0 and T-5 in it, took it home, parked it, began the swap.

Here ya go, some fresh shots. Car isn't quite finished yet as you can see, runs and drives and all, trans cooler still isn't in it, need some fitting for the braided line for that. Had to send the PMS away so only have the stock computer in the car right now as-well. Got some more stuff to wire into the tach (coolant temp/trans temp & oil pressure are going through my tach, as well as the wideband, but that's already done) so interior is all torn up.

Took a pic of the bushing in the mount how I had to move it as far back as I could, tried to get a snap of the welds where I cut the crossmember, but I ground them off so they're almost un-noticeable to the eye, let alone a camera. Also forgot I had to lengthen mounting holes in the crossmember as it still wouldn't go back far enough, and had to move them to the side a bit as it is a little off-center.

Took a snap of the rear of the 4R70W, has an AOD extension housing on it so I could use the T-5 yoke, and it allows me to get a billet yoke if I feel like it in the future since nobody seems to make one for a 4R70w. The rest of it is covered by the exhaust.

Shifter's in there too, that was a bastard to get in, since the car was a standard, I had to hammer the tunnel down about 1/2" since the tunnel sits taller with a stick, and hammer it up from underneath. Hammer is this cars best friend.

Trans computer is under the passenger seat, the PMS is right beside it, but had to send that away to get repaired, so it's not there right now.

Can see the flaming river std ratio manual rack, deleted P/S and A/C when the new engine made its way in.

The rest are just misc pics of the set-up

yeah your car is crazy amazing man. I was checking my stang out a bit more with this c6 issue and the cross member isnt my only problem my headers also dont fit now I have long tubes and to be honest this c6 seems like a terrible idea and i am strongly debating going with a t5 and a clutch from falcon i would also throw in a ford racing re build kit from summit.

I have probably 350-400 rear wheel torque how long and well you think the t5 will hold up? I will only be using street tires.

Thanks im glad to be apart of the MF group =)
