Default questions on 351w shortblock swap

My brother has a 351w that he had the bottom end built on that he no longer wishes to use. The block is a 70 so I know I'd have to run a retro fit roller and change the valve springs on my afrs.

My first question is what cam could I get away with and pass smog? I know the engine is 10.5:1 and I was thinking id just have comp cams custom grind a cam that is the same specs as the E303 but with way more lift like 580 or 590 with the 1.7s.

My other concern is, how can I get this to clear the stock hood? I have heard of some people using the truck lower manifold or do I just have to get a cowl hood? I assume other than these problems, all the accessories just bolt up don't they? Any suggestions or help is appreciated, thanks.

your questions really arent answered... that sitcky up top is fox specific..

It fails to mention that with an SN, your alternator and P/S brackets will bolt right up.

You are going to have a very hard time getting it to fit under the stock hood. DO NOT run "drop mounts" you shouldn't EVER change the angle of the crank in the car. It was put in the way it is for a reason. Not to mention the driveline vibration issues that you will get afterwards. Just get yourself a Cobra R or a cowl like mine, and you will be all set

interesting... my 92 tbird with a 351 swap vibes like cranzy and i can't seem to figure out why, I attributed it to the engine not being balanced correctly but maybe that isin't the case. I'll have to dig deeper but thanks for bringing this to my attention

cowl stlye hood and intake manifold of your choosing.
like adder stated, your accessories will line up, but (obviously) make sure you use the 94/95 timing cover.

also remember that the 69/70 351W block are a 9.480" deck, not a 9.500" deck. limits your intake choices a good deal.

as for passing smog, the average emissions tester is NOT going to be able to tell the difference between a 302 and a 351W. if they sniff the tailpipes, you might be hosed (they used to back when i lived in CT, but MA, believe it or not, doesnt test 95 and older cars...). just make sure its kind of quiet and has cats (hollow them out of you want like i just did) so it looks kosher.

baby boy due 20091203, cars kind of on the back burner (he's gonna help build it).

408W carb'd in the works (block and rotating kit already here).

the 351w lightning gt40 lower will work on it right? I was going to use that with my cobra upper. Can't believe how expensive they are though, can't find a lower for under 300 bucks.

I have a few other questions. What distributor did you go with? I was just going to get one at the kragens from a 94 351w truck and put a steel gear on it. As far as the cam goes, what duration do you think i could get away with on the intake and exhaust? I was going to go with 220/220, 114 degree lobe separation, with about 575 lift with the 1.7s. I have heard of people passing in CA with 224/224 in a 302 though.

no, all efi stuff is based on a 9.500" deck height. the lightnings used a F4TE block (although not all of them were hyd roller, they WERE able to accept that valvetrain).
MSD makes a drop in dist. for 94/95 mustangs. if you want to swap in this block, look into a carb manifold (like an edelbrock) that has been drilled for injectors. use that with an elbow and go to a fox style TB.
youre going to need Bassani 5.8 headers if you want to go longtubes. theyre the only company that makes them for these cars.
as far as emissions...
you live in Cali, so your best bet in to call and get a custom grind. i dont know what will and wont pass there, but i can guarantee it wont be anything good.
