Question want to build a BUDGET 393w but need help!!!

WELL I AM TRYING TO BUILD A BUDGET ENGINE AND I NEED SOME ADVISE . I HAVE A 94 351W BLOCK BORED 0.060 OVER., RPM 9000 CAST CRANKSHAFT WITH 3.85 STROKE, SPEED PRO PISTONS (H273CP .060) , STOCK RECONDITION 351W RODS WITH ARP BOLTS, AND X-303 CAM. FOR THE TOP END I HAVE A TRICK FLOW TRACK HEAT UPPER AND LOWER INTAKE WITH A BBK 75MM THROTTLE BODY, 30LBS INJECTORS, AND SOME TRICK FLOW 170CC AS CAST HEADS WITH 1.6 ROCKERS.
I WANT TO KNOW IF THE COMPRESSION WOULD BE LOW ENOUGH FOR PUMP GAS AND IF NOT, IS THERE ANY OTHER CHEAP 302 PISTON OUT THERE THAT I CAN USE??? ALSO, WHAT OTHER CAM COULD I USE TO GET THE MOST OUT OF THIS 393W ENGINE????

I PLAN TO HAVE THIS ENGINE AS A DAILY DRIVER AND MILD 1/4 MILE TRACK USE.

Well if you have these things you can find your C/R:

cylinder volume
cc of heads
heads gskt thick
deck clearance
piston cc`s

with aluminum heads you can go roughly 11.5:1 on some good pump gas like 93, but i think in cali there is only 91 right? that should be fine also, pump gas is a plus or minus percent on octane anyway!
That is all i rememeber from 6yrs ago!

Well you have more like 398 cu in with the .060 piston and best i can figure not knowing your exact deck clearnce and gasket thikness i came up with 11.4:1 i used the felpro 1011-2 gasket thickness and just est .010 deck clearance since its normally between .008 and .015 and 60cc chambers sorry that is close as i can get you without know exact numbers!!

if you wanted budget you couldve gotten a 3.85 crank and used stock 302 pistons on stock 351W rods...

cant really get any cheaper than that

I looked into what you have. The pistons give you 8 cc in valve reliefs. Plus you get about 2 cc from the ring land. Gasket gives you about 10 cc. The piston you selected has you at about .015 to .020 in th hole and this gives you about 1.5 to 2 more cc. The head chamber volume is 61 cc.

389.7 cubes gives you about 10.5 to 10.75 to one compression. 91 to 93 pump gas will do.

I hope you know that those pistons do not have TFS valve reliefs. You should have piston to valve clearance with that cam but you MUST confirm it when you build it. If you do not have the heads yet, you will get better results with the Fast AS Cast TFS 190 heads given you are close to 400 cubic inches.

Your going to choke the hell out of that motor if you put 170cc head on it. But than again, I personally think everything listed is undersized. Why such a small TB, Intake, injectors, cam, etc?. I understand that your trying to do this on a budget but were you planning on buying all these parts new? If so, than why not buy the right parts that should be on this motor and get them used instead. You can get a used intake, tb, injectors, etc. and it would prob be cheaper.

I would ditch that cam also. Jay Allen, owner of Camshaft Innovations, will take your specs and suggest a cam best suited for your setup for $50 dollars. I would take that road ANYDAY over throwing an alphabet cam on my 393w. The performance gain would be WELL worth it. Just my .02.

WELL 88BLUEGT THE 170CC HEADS, ROCKERS, TB, INTAKE, AND CAM WAS ON MY 351W BEFORE I DECIDED TO STROKE THE MOTOR. I KNOW THAT I NEED TO GO BIGGER FOR SURE ON THE CAM HEADS AND POSSIBLY THE TB AND INJECTORS. I GOT THE NEW CRANKSHAFT FOR 140 AND THE NEW SET OF H273 PISTONS FOR 80 AT THE POLMONA SWAMP MEET. I THINK THAT WAS A GOOD DEAL CONSIDERING THAT MY 351W WAS ALREADY BORED TO 0.060. THE ONLY THING I GOT DONE AT THE SHOP WAS GET THE CYLINDERS HONED, NEW CAM BEARINGS, AND FREEZE PLUGS.

THANKS Venomantidote95 AND wildcobrar FOR HELPING ME WITH MY COMPRESSION RATIO RANGE!!! I AM GOING TO START BUILDING THE BOTTOM END IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS FROM NOW. I AM PLANNING TO GET A CUSTOM CAM BUT I FIRST WANT TO GET A BETTER SET OF HEADS . I WAS LEANING TOWARDS THE VIC JR'S 205 ALUM. HEADS OR THE AFR 205'S; IT JUST DEPENDS ON WHAT KIND OF DEALS COULD I GET FOR THOSE HEADS. BUT FOR NOW I JUST WANT TO GET IT TOGETHER AND SEE WHAT IT DOES WITH WHAT I HAVE ON HAND NOW. I HOPE TO GET AT LEAST 375HP AND 400TQ WITH THOSE 170CC HEADS AND X-303 ALPHA CAM.

SUMMIT RACING has a smoking deal on their TFS 205 Twisted wedge heads right now. AFR 205 and Vic Jr 205 heads won't run with them!
