New to the site and need a few opinions.
I Have a 79 351w that i want to put into my 85 GT.
Im looking to get around 500hp and have it as a daily driver .
I was originally gonna bore it but decided not to.
I have a few ideas of what i want the set up to be but id like people that have more experience with it to give me some help, Thanks.

500 flywheel HP or RWHP?. You should be looking into a stroker set up that would help alot.

Wouldn't be too hard to build a mild motor and just spray it to get 500.

500 RWHP N/A will be tough.
-For a good set of heads figure $1500-1800.
-If you go with say a good 408 kit. $1300 with bearings
-Machine work. I would find a new block. 79 blocks aren't roller capable. You'll spend quite a bit for retro lifters. You can use a reduced base circle cam but, your options are very limited on camshafts.
- Victor intake $175 used
- Carb $300 for good one. Be careful when buying used carbs.
- Headers $200 (hooker longtubes used)
- Fuel pump and lines $350-500
- 28oz flywheel $200 (5 spd)
- Good balancer $175-250
- Camshaft $200
Then you have small nickel and dime stuff.
Your best bet for a decent motor is to buy one built already.

Ya I found some RHS 210cc heads for a little over $13OO New on Ebay.
And as far as a stroker kit im lookin to spend 8-900$ for a decent stroker kit. I would rather buy the best because you get what you pay for but with the budget im trying to do most of it on heads, car and intake. And id like to have all new stuff (intake, carb, etc) because i want to do it the best i can this first time so when i go to do it again or upgrade there wont be much hassle.

Sell your 85 GT, combine the 3,500 and the money you get from your GT. Lets say you get around 3K from your GT if its worth it. So you got 7k to go out and buy one fully built. You can get a hell of a mustang for that price. I'm just saying, 3500 is a long stretch on getting a 500 hp motor in to your car. Unless you have a lot of money coming in to add to this project for later use your car will quickly turn in to a jack stand queen!! 7k-8k you could go out and find a supercharged car or turbo car for the street and will be alot more streetable than a n/a 500 hp motor. This is just my opinion, Im all about building cars but I have seen and done myself, sinking so much money into a car to build it and not even getting close to finishing it. Then you eventually end up selling it because you get so sick of looking at it!! Just my two cents- look at your whole situation and just really put on paper how much it will take you to build it!!

If you want 500 rwhp stay away from heads on ebay. You won't find a good stroker kit for a 351w for $900. The good ones start at about $1100. If your trying to build this with all new parts figure on a minimum of $5500. For the budget your working with your best bet is to find someone selling a motor that is similar to what you want.
