Well if you go with EFI than you are going to need to upgrade your fuel system (injectors, pump, etc.) Also, you might want to consider upgrading your ignition (box, coil, distributer, wires). Now you said that you were thinking long tubes. For ex: I paid 350 for my MAC LT's. Intake manifold, atleast 400-600. Heads really depends on what brand/size. They can range from $850-1600 for nice street heads. And cam $150-300. Than little things like motor mounts, gaskets, and all the little things in between. If I were you this is what I would do.

Fuel- Injectors, Fuel Pump.
Ignition- MSD Ignition box, MSD Blaster Coil, MSD Pro-Billet Distributer, MSD Ignition wires (or FRPP)
Heads- AFR 185 or 205's
Cam- Custom Grind from Comp (its really worth it)
Manifold- Edelbrock RPM II U & L
Suspension- Stuts, shocks, subframe connectors, upper/lower control arms, etc.
Rear- Limited slip, Strange 3:73's, Strange axles.
Cooling- Electric water pump, nice radiator

Im sure you get the point. You can keep it cheap or you can go all out. You dont NEED everything here but it wouldnt be a bad idea. Im sure someone would like to shed some more light....

Also, learn about carbs and carb it

carbed will m ake ur life a lot easier, plus it will make it TONS cheaper. for example- intake manifolds are about $300 cheaper on average than EFI ones, tuning EFI gets expensive, injectors are expensive, more electrical BS to mess with

Aye, Carbed is more user freindly for the driveway tuner. Although with all that wires more power can be found, but it costs ALOT more, and is ALOT bigger headache. Carb is more fun, but EFI can have higher power.
