3.8 AIR pump help
im supposed to be troubleshooting for this chicks car tomorrow. she has an idiot light happening so she took it to autozone and got the following codes.....
------------------------------
P0411
The PCM has determined that the flow detected in the secondary air injection system is incorrect for the current engine operating conditions
possible causes:
circuit relay defective or fuse open
check connector and wiring
AIR pump defective or hoses blocked
-------------------------------------
P0301
The PCM has dertermined that a misifre has occurred in cylinder #1
The powertrain control module monitors the crankshaft speed and has detected a misfire condition
possible causes:
ignition system fault - spark plug
ignition wires, coil
vacuum leak
injector fault
high or low fuel pressure
----------------------------------
its a NE stang, it has a single large coil pack instead of a distributor - i dont know the exact year though.
the coil pack / plug wires / plugs were changed about 6 months ago - but i will check those and if thats not it my guess is a clogged injector. my main question is, has anyone ever gotten the first code? how can i tell if the air pump works or not? if its a "circuit relay or open fuse" i have NO idead how to track down the problem.
input before tomorrow morning would be GREATLY appreciated

RE: 3.8 AIR pump help
DTC P0411/P1411 indicates Secondary Air not detected. In order to test the pump, it must be capable of driving the HO2S lean. You should have two AIR Diverter valves. Possible causes:
AIR Pump fault.
Hose from AIR Pump blocked.
Hose from AIR Pump leak
AIR Bypass Solenoid stuck open/closed.
AIR Bypass Solenoid leak/blocked.
Visually inspect AIR Pump hoses from the AIR Pump to the AIR Diverter valves.
Inspect air hose for cracks, binding, obstructions, water or ice.
the misfire code is probably a bad plug.

RE: 3.8 AIR pump help
ok she comes over today and now there is a hella exhaust leak. sounds like its up top right behind the intake. does anyone have pics of these motors with the intake off? im trying to get a visual of where this AIR piping connects without gutting stuff just yet.
please, urgent help needed i'll be working on this thing within the hour!

RE: 3.8 AIR pump help
She most likely has a cracked manifold on the passenger side right at the collector.
As far as the misfire goes pull the plug and wire on the cylinder that is misfiring check them and re-install, ensuring that the connectors are fully engaged at both the plug and coil end of the wire.
The only other thing I can suggest is to remove the DPFE sensor and try cleaning it out with a "no-residue" brake cleaner, I prefer O'Rielly's brand for this. This sensor is renowned for causing wierd codes and goes out fairly commonly.

#1 spark plug misfire is not common but makes sense since it is the longest wire.
The air pumps on our cars are not hte most reliable. Mine was replaced within the first two years under warranty.

RE: 3.8 AIR pump help
with an air system code, and an "exhaust leak" i'm gonna bet on one of the rubber hoses for the air pump.
they got hot, and crack and break open, and they sound like a header/manifold leak when that happens.
