The wid band sensors compared to a regular A/F gauge are just really more accurate. A normal A/F gauge will still do it's function but with a wideband you can get the actuall reading, i.e. 11.4.
I got a regular A/F gauge in a nitrous car and it did it's job when an injector went out. Pegged lean so we let off. The $60 gauge saved the motor.
