CVT tranny's in drag racing?
I'm sure you are all aware of what a CVT does. Seeing as they keep the car at max power (or very close to max power) once the pedal is pushed to the floor beyond, say 35-40 mph, could these transmissions make their appearance in drag racing?

my dadhad a customer with a CVT car the other day, and he said that it was terrible...the electronic "shifts" that they insert are sloppy and awkward, and at times, it sounds like the transmission is slipping when it is changing it drum ratio...

I'd imagine once they become more common in family cars, given the extra time until then they will improve hopefully so they work out all/most of the kinks, and maybe...they may be found in a Mustang!

Hmmm, my mom had an '05Five Hundred with a CVT and she absolutely hated the thing. I drove it a few times and it was interesting, but I kind of like the who act of going through the gears with an auto(or manual ifI had a choice ). It may have accelerated faster than with an auto, but I think mpg was actually worse (only by 1-3 mpg but still) than the 6-speed auto offered. She got a Fusion AWD/6-spd auto and is much happier.
Actually reading that it was sort of off the topic but to keep it on I think it will probably be awhile, if ever, until we see CVTs in drag racing as I believe the current reliability and power handling limits sort of suck right now.

I sold a sentra with it the other day...it shifts really smooth but it does seem sloppy, and I dont know if it would be a good drag racing transmission...not everyone makes all there power at redline.

I also agree that I would much prefer going through actual gears instead of humming at a high rpm for a bit, but I just thought I would throw that out there and see what you guys think...it just seems like if you are at max power then you are probably going faster than if you were to move throughout the powerband.
