Talking Making my own DIY CAI....progress pics

Well, I haven't seen any DIY CAI's on 4.0's yet.....so i've decided to make one.

Don't mind the scotch tape holding it together ....it was simply for the picture ONLY LOL.

Here's the progress thus far.

First off ....yea i know I gotta get a MAF adapter of some sort.....it's covered
Gonna go to a JY and get the top half of the factory air box that houses the MAFS and cut off the box thing just leaving the tube with the maf hole in it

I need to also tap a hole for the pcv situation.....i'm gonna find a piece from advance or home depot or somewhere so that i don't have to cut that cool easy on/off clip thing off.
I'll post pics when it comes along a little more

The reason for doing it this way is so I can keep my factory system and hook it right back up for when it goes in for service.....Then plan is.....to keep everything easily able for me to put it to stock when it goes in for service and such.
Muffler goes on and off with 5 bolts and ten minutes, the cold air kit the same....back to stock in less than 5 minutes.
This way all i have to do is reflash the computer to stock once i get my bama tune.
Ford will never know that anything has been done
win win

Yeah, I don't see the difference between this and any aftermarket CAI in that regard. Good job doing your own work though. How are you sure you're getting the same air that you would with the stock airbox? Or, if you are getting more air, how does Doug know how to tune for it?

I am always up for DIY mods, but you could have gotten an aftermarket CAI which would have been better quality, better performance, and none of the issue you mentioned.

It takes only a few minutes to swap out the factory airbox on almost any CAI.

Assuming you've increased air flow enough to make this worthwhile, how are you accounting for the PCM changes required to prevent you from destroying your engine due to running lean? That's what the CEL that'll eventually appear will be for. Of course, if you're getting a custom tune to go with your creation, then you should be ok.

FYI, many dealerships don't give a ratz azz what your mods are. And unless the mod is directly related to whatever the warranty issue is, they legally can't deny you warranty work. My Stang has been back to the shop a few times and with the CAI & tune and aftermarket exhaust, the only comment was "Nice job".

Yea, and mufflers dont void warranties.
Put that INSIDE the OEM air box for the
complete CAI stealth look and function.

Must have a lot of time on your hands.
Be sure and get a wideband O2 guage
so your homemade CAI dont homemade
make homemade your engine run homemade
lean.

For all those regarding a tune......I will be gettin a bama tune.....it should flow about the same as the bbk or similar.....maybe not a C&L or JLT but it willl flow "better" than stock...lol
and yes I get bored somedays after i'm done with homework and studying, and it's usually too late to go out anywhere, and i had these parts just lying around, so essentially it will cost me the price of tube connectors and clamps lol

I know other CAI kits go on and off really easily....i'm just doing this bc I can and had the parts lying around I just couldn't justify 250 bucks for an aftermarket CAI when i had the stuff already ....ya know ?

thanks for all the comments guys!

I will post more pics prolly tomorrow or later tonight!

I can just tell him to tune it for a K&N drop in or maybe a bbk cai.....should flow relatively similar
we'll see what he says once i get the money for his tune though i'll email him my mods list and we'll go from there!
thanks@!
