In short no: The Xcal 2 locks itself to the VIN # of the car it's holding the stock tune for, and can't be used on another car unless the stock tune is reflashed onto the original vehicle.

And no, no chip, it connects to an electical connector under the dash, and reprograms the existing computer.

I have a quick question on how you get the programs. If I were to buy this tuner, would it come with the programs I need to flash my 05 mustang? or would I have to download it off the internet or something?

The answer is, it depends. When I first decided to buy a SCT XCAL2, I went to one of the local shops. They would sell me an XCAL 2 for a reasonable price, but it only came with one program. They wanted $100 for each additional program. I was also in contact with SCT and was aware it was really the seller’s prerogative as to what they included, but that most sellers sold the XCAL2 with a full load of programs. At their suggestion, I contacted Velocity Mustang Performance ( http://www.vmptuning.com ). I was able to buy the XCAL2 from VMP for less than the local shop wanted and it included an 87, 91 and 93 octane tune, so buyer be ware. Shop around before you buy.

Regarding downloads, it is possible for your tuner (generally the guy you bought it from, but not necessarily) to e-mail you a tune that you can upload to the XCAL2.

BTW, VMP specializes in V6 performance and call them for the best prices.

I got mine from an Ebay auction. Ethan emailed me back after I had a bunch of questions and we even talked on the phone for a half hour before I bought it from him. Shipping was lighting fast and he sent me 2 programs with my SCT2. One for 87 octane and one for 93 octane. SCT2 works like a charm.

Yes, you reload the tune and modify the parameters where you can switch gear ratios
