The muffler is mounted on the car. If you walk behind it the sound is indeed some deeper, but inside not much different.
When you look how a muffler is made http://auto.howstuffworks.com/muffler3.htm it should be possible to drill a hole 8mm (with a very long drill) to ruin the resonate chamber.
