Default Strange "vibration" 1500 - 2000 RPM

Weather's been a bit too ugly to get under the car yet so I'm not sure as to what might be going on.

Anyhow, I get an odd sound... not really a vibration that I can feel... nor do I feel it in the wheel or in the shift knob but it's definitely there. Almost like a misfire... but not really as there's no juddering in the engine or drivetrain and such. It is... weird. It's also less pronounced when the car is COLD.

I'm thinking... since the muffler on the car is awfully new looking... is it possible that had some exhaust components been replaced, could this be a result of the exhaust "Vibration Dampers" perhaps having been removed?

Yeah, it sounds silly... but if this is a "replacement" system it's possible. Of course, I would wonder as well... if this were the case, would one not see the same odd symptom with aftermarket dual exhaust?

Dunno... could also be completely un-related so I'm kinda fishing here... and hoping someone else may have had a similar issue with vibration damper absentia.

Were does the sound come from, front or rear? The factory "anti-drone" or "vibration damper" look like a small cylinder welded to the side if the exaust pipe. I believe there is one close to the Y pipe and another close to the muffler. Take a look under there and see if they are present. Also note if the exhaust looks aftermarket or factory. If it is aftermarket, the sound might just be exhaust drone. All aftermarket exhaust systems drone, some more or less than others.

If the sound is comeing from the rear or directly under the car, that may be a good place to start. Let us know what you find under there.

Most issues in the 1500-2000 RPM range have typically been exhaust related. If the system isn't OEM, do you know what axleback is on? I know that on the V8's, rattles and vibrations in that RPM range were usually drone, heat shield or exhaust hanger related. There's also a TSB on a rattle from something associated with the tranny but I'm not sure if it applies to the V6. Haven't read it in quite awhile.

I had a similar sound - loose bolt on the exhaust hangar or dampener, can't remember. Anyway, gave the stealership 35 bucks to find it and tighten a frickin bolt. With the amount of money i've spent there, the a-holes shoulda done it for free imo. if you have jacks, I would put it up there and check all your exhaust connections and hangars and such.

Also, I believe I read about a TSB where there was a vibration from the flywheel area on manuals (?)... can't remember the details. might want to peruse the TSBs.

THAT sounds of interest for sure. I'll check the exhaust and such. I know there's an open recall on the car but it's airbag related... so perhaps when I take it in for that, I'll see what they can tell me as to the vibe.

Meanwhile... where might I find this TSB?

And THANKS to all for the replies. Still way to wet to get under there but things will be drying out this week finally.

So I guess it's around the gearshift area the noise comes from, says the TSB, but there it is. Maybe that's it.

Well not for nothing... seeing as there is an open recall on the car (passenger airbag somethingorother) I'm dropping it off at Ford on Thursday. I told the service manager I have a 90 day / 3000 mile Powertrain Warranty on it... and if they could, give the powertrain a looking over and advise as to if there's anything that needs attention.

This sound... comes... goes... sometimes it's LOUD... other times, very subdued.. hell for all I know it could just be a Mustang thing and if nothing else, I'll end up with a bit of peace of mind.

That... or the place I bought it from will have a little work to do (or pay for).

Funny you should mention... the other night on our way back from an Halloween party apparanly my lady dropped a couple of bobby pins... they ended up in the door pocket.... You would NOT BELIEVE the racket those things made in conjunction with the door subs....

Stay tuned!
