I don't mind my 4.0, as even the relatively small amount of power it makes can still be fun if you drive it right. As far as reliability goes, mine only has 55000 miles, so I wouldn't be able to say a whole ton about that. No problems yet though. As others have mentioned though, these motors seem to handle FI well, as well as being able to run for a long time with proper care and maintenance.
I just recently purchased a 2008 v6 Mustang with the 4.0L and I wanted to know how reliable the engine itself is. I bought it with 94k Miles. just let me know what you guys think.
I wouldn't say this engine has "Honda" or "Toyota" reliability and longevity but I know many Explorers with well over 150k miles that are daily driven. Some have even been used to tow boats and small campers. Towing is generally pretty hard on drivetrains FYI.
In a Mustang the engines not working nearly as hard to move it. So assuming it has been well maintained during its life I'd say 200k without too much trouble is quite attainable. Until the rigns wear out or the valve seals go the power output should remain close to stock. Mod away sir!
I plan to give my sixer to my son in a few years, by then it will probably have 150k or more (42k now).

Great engines longevity wise. Def lacking on power and gas mileage compared to the newer 3.7, but still a good motor.
I'm relatively happy with the mileage I get with my 4.0L. I get just over 30 mpg. Admittedly, a 5 speed, mostly highway driving and not trying to get 5.0L performance out of a 4.0L helps.
