Default 05 V6 Mustang Engine Blown?

So long story short, I drove to ohio from kentucky on christmas day with no problems what so ever. We arrived at our destination and I turned the car off like anybody else. Next day we packed the car up to head home, turned the key and POP!!!!!. Valve covers BLEW OFF and oil was spewing out of the bottom of the car followed by a lot of smoke. The only thing we can think of is that the timing chain messed up and caused a massive backfire and blew the valve covers off. We are taking the engine out tonight to check for cracks in the block and everything else. Have you guys ever heard of anything like this?

Yes, you have a big job ahead of you. I have to take mine in this Spring to have the timing belt replaced. I change it every 60,000 and due for second replacement. If I remember, I will ask the experienced mechanic where I take mine for routine maintenance, if he has heard such a thing.....if I remember!

Never heard anything like that before Nyhm. Don't bother rebuilding the engine, just replace it. The 4.0 is available and cheap - you can probably pick up a low mileage one for less than the cost of parts for a rebuild; unless you plan to build a stronger engine with forged internals.

And teetertotter - the 4.0 does not have a "timing belt". It has timing chains on the front driver side and the back of the passenger side. You have to mean the serpentine belt which is not the same thing, and very easy to replace unlike the timing chains.

Throttle body spacer and a flowmaster axleback exhaust. So basically nothing.
