Default TECH HOW TO: SPEEDCAL INFO

This write up is presented by HaV...

Because I am SUCH a nice guy, I took pics of my speedcal install. I put the stock speed sensor gear back in place becuase the 23 tooth gear was made for 3.55's.. would work fine for 3.73's.. but was still about 8mph off at highway speeds on my 4.10's.. which was better then about 13mph off.. but yeah.

Anyways I ran into a problem on my install that I dont think many people will. The VSS connector came off of the transmission fine, the red connector holding the wires in place slid out just fine.. but the wires would NOT come out. Keep in mind that I did this in my garage with just a scissor jack because I am dying to have my speedo correct... so I couldnt get the most leverage in the world on them. I pulled the rubber stopper on the back side of the connector out as well.. still couldnt get them to slide so I ended up snipping the wires, sticking the connector in a vice, and hammering the wires out with a landing screw driver and a hammer. Took about 4 hits on each. Slide out.. yeah, that happened . I used some electrical tape and wire nuts to mate them correctly. I woulda solderd them together.. except for the fact I would have been only inches from my face with the stuff... might do it on a friends rack somtime to make it more perminant. Anyways, the pics below are all linked so I didnt have a 5mb post.

Anyways I am sure most of you have done this before or would not need help doing this.. but we do get some questions on it.. so yeah. And I am pretty sure that this, like most installs on a stang, can be found in pic form on a brand new show room clean stang on a lift somewhere.. which looks nothing like what you actualy see under the car. lol.

I'll post the instructions as well
Using the ratio multiplier table at the end of these instructions or the DMP speedcal worksheet, determine the correct ratio multiplier and enter the binary code into the speedcal thena ttach the cover with the suppled screws.

Step 2
Remove the vehicle negative battery cable

Step 3
Inside the vehicle passenger compartment, remove the shifter knob, outer shift boot, and inner shift boot. The outer boot is snapped in place and can be removed by pulling it straight up and out. The inner shift boot is attached with 4 8mm bolts.

Step 4
Route the speedcal harness down the drivers side of the transmission and reinstall the inner boot.

Step 5
Connect the red wire of the speedcal to the cigarette lighter hot wire with the provided scotch lock. Wire should be blue.

Step 6
Center the speedcal ahead of the shifter and reinstall the outer boot and shifter knob

Step 7
Under the vehicle, locate and remove the VSS connector on the drivers die of the transmission

Step 8
Using a small flat bladed screw driver or a thin punch, carefully remove the red contact lock inside the connector shell. Carefully slide the screw driver/punch down the side of each contact to disengage the contact retainer and remove both contacts from the connector shell.
GOOD LUCK WITH THIS!

Step 9
Place the VSS connector shell removed in the previous step onto the spedcal blue and green wires. Keying is not important.

Step 10
Push the contacts into the connector shell untill the retainers engage. Re-insert the red contact lock

Step 11
Reconnect the VSS Connector
Didnt take pics of the last 3. Looks the same when your done except attached to the speed cal instead of the wiring harness.

Step 12
In the vehicle harness VSS wire pair (The pair of wires you just removed from the VSS connector), determine which of the two wires is the ground wire. On 94-98 models it will be pink/orange. On the 99 and up it should be gray/red
Wire from step 12

Step 13
Find the supplied connector shell in the speedcal installation kit. Using the connector shell keys as a guide align the ground wire so it iwll make contact with the speedcal's gray wire when the two connectors are mated. (or in my case splice the sonuvabitch and wire nut them together.. and skip to the final step)

Step 14
Insert the remaining vehicle harness wire into the remaining connector location. Again push the contacts into the connector shell untill the contact retainers engage. Insert the supplied red key lock into the connector shell

Step 15
Connect the vehicle harness to the speedcal connector. Tie the excess wiring up with zip ties.

Step 16
Reconnect the battery and see if it works!
It should if you followed the steps. Mine works great now!

Hope this helps someone out there! This is 100% a DIY job. Dont waste money paying a shop to do it. Even with having to take a plan B I only used a scissor jack, 8mm socket, 5/16th socket on the battery, wire strippers, flat head screw driver, and a hammer to beat some wires out that 99% wont have to do. lol.
