Would it be possible to swap out a 4.6 SOHC engine for a 347 or a 351? The car is a 1997 Mustang GT with an automatic transmission. What kind of problems would i run into, for example; clearance, new mounting brackets, transmission, exhaust, etc... It wouldnt be done right away, but probably within the next 2 years. I like the 4.6 but instead of running a supercharger/nitrous/turbo i would rather just have all engine, and there isnt a stroker out there i want. Im planning on going to the junkyard to get an engine, rebuild it over winter into next summer, and drop it in. Any posts would be appreciated.
how much hp are you wanting? cuz if you forge the 4.6 block and get stg 2 or 3 heads and cams you will be pushing well over 350 hp on just the motor alone.

Your going to have all of the problems you mentioned and probably more. Even if you can do everything yourself it is still going to be extremely expensive and time consuming, and unless you spend major bucks on your new engine you will end up making less whp.
Just about any engine in Ford's arsenal will physically fit (Windsor, Cleveland, Y, FE, 385). You'll need to fabricate engine mounts, an exhaust, and change the tranny to match the new engine.
The big question is, how much power are you after? A DOHC 5.4L would give quite a bit of a power upgrade, especially with performance oriented cams, and a good bit of a torque upgrade, too. Going outside the mod arena may land you in trouble with Johnny, but that's your choice.

I would like to get around 350 hp from just the engine, but still pass emissions and inspection. If its possible to do it with the current 4.6, that would be great, but i havent seen it yet from a SOHC.
