Well I have just aquired a 2001 5.4 from a wrecked Expidetion. The engine only has 40,XXX miles on it so I am thinking about takeing the heads off haveing them ported and polished, adding a set of cams, and then seeing if I can install this into my mustang. If I am not mistaking they will bolt right up using the stock transmission and motor mounts. I also know they use the same computer so it seems like it could be a simple swap. Any of you guys know anything about this, or anyone who has done it. Or just any articles or websites that have info on it?

I looked into doing a 5.4swap with ported/polished Navigator heads. After research, I determined it wasn't worth the time or money for the small gains the 5.4 would give over the 4.6. Just my 2 pesos.
go for it my friend who has a 98 cobra put a 5.4 engine in his car and it runs great and sounds great...he hasnt had any problems and he probly has about 5k with the new motor

I was going to do the same thing but only 5.4 dohc because the 2v just isnt worth it. You going to be adding alot more weight and minimal power. Im pretty sure the cooling system might be diff and i know you need difff brake booster to fit the heads in and i think the intake manifolds are completely differnt. There is an article on it in the new mmff. The reason i didnt do it was because i didnt want to go through the trouble of chaning the computer and cooling system for dohc and its jus too expensive for the gains.

i would actually like to see someone go thru with the swap and show some proof of the result. i dont know the specs of the 5.4 but im willing to bet it has alot more torque.
and someone made the comment about wieght, dosent the 4.6 and 5.4 share the same block.
i want to see how having those extra cubic inches responds to bolt on mods.

I know that the intake would probably be the hardest part, yet I am almost positive that the computers are the exact same. I also don't think it woulb be that much of a weight difference. Also either way its gonna be better even bone stock than my pre PI gt. I could also do one of those stroker kits for the 5.4, just think a ported, polished, stroked out 5.4 in a mustang sounds awesome to me, I just don't know if I would ever be able to go with forced induction if I do go through with it.
where did you get the info that the computers are the same? i find that hard to beleive. i know that they are almost identical but they are of diferent displacements and would have a diferent powerband and different fuel and spark requirements. i think it could work but would be rough until you do some tuning.
on a side note whats the redline on the 5.4?
