Question Im turboing my 97 Cobra Need some advice!

Hello Im new to the Cobra but not the turbo sceene. I have a 1997 Cobra All stock But I'm looking for some real kick! Im going with a Holset HX40 turbo (rear mounted) My quistion is I wanna lower the comp without opening the motor (yet)! Well The only thing I can really do is put a thicker head gasket in. Well who makes it and how thick can I go to get say....9.5 or maybe a little lower? Also If I get a thinker head gasket will the Timing cover still bolt on ok? Intake will be pulled apart also. If anyone has any good info please inform me.

Whats the max power I can push safely tuned at the wheel? 400whp? Where talking stock motor and a real safe tune under boost!

yeah, 400whp is about as much as you can go safely, really i think turboing your car is gonna be a waste of money if you're not going into the engine to forge it anyway.... i say either build the engine or go the supercharger route... just my .02

Well if I hold off on boost can I get 350-400 whp N/A? Seems like a lot of money dumped into the car to achive that when I can just build the motor for that price and really boost it! My goal in the future is 3000 pound car with a good diet and 600-700 whp.

IMHO - get the turbo running on the motor as is, if she blows be ready with a forged bottom end motor with lower compression. Only thing worth money on the older Cobra motors is a $300 block, $300 crank, and maybe $75 set of cams. Everything else isn't worth much anymore even at the scrap yard. Basically don't be afraid to blow the first motor if you are already planning a replacement and you should be for any real boost from a turbo.

400rwhp is safe on stock internals. Putting a turbo on this engine will easily get you there and leave you wanting more. My advise is to forge the bottom end first, that way you can turn up the boost. The B heads love boost and are very capable of the 600-700hp you're looking for. Forge it now or forge it after it blows, it's cheaper now.

+1..

as you said in an above post OP you want the 600-700whp so you might as well just wait till you have the money and forge/build your motor, throw in some blower cams while you're in there and when all is said and done you will have a badass car.

idk, if your goal is much higher than the stock internals can take no sense in using stock internals.

It's not that big of a deal to go forged with that starting setup. Just get the blocked and the crank cleaned up, buy the pistons and rods and through it back together.

Yea your probly right! The turbo I have will support 650whp or upgrade to an hx50 and it will good for 850whp. I only have 72k on my cobra/motor do you think its safe to slap the pistons and rods in and go without boring the block over? I can still see see the cross hatch's as if they where just done! I can buy forged rods and pistons. Well I guess I could just say my goal is 130-135 mph trapps I could care less about time. Thanks guys. Manley rods and pistons? 1200 shipped for the set....

I would definitely do new bearings and ARP hardware as well.
