Default TECH: Does your 4.6 GT shut off when idling or die while cruising?

This problem seems to pop up on the forums atleast 2-3 times a week and the threads don't always get the attention they deserve or the correct responses.

So here goes:

If your 96+ GT stalls after you start it, or if it'll only keep running if you keep your foot in the gas...or your car stalls while slowing down for a light or at any other time when your foot is OFF the gas or coming off the gas, it will most likely be your Idle Air Controller.

You can get one at any parts store for anywhere from $35-80 bucks, depending on where you shop or if you go to the dealer. It seems to be an extremely common problem with cars that have over 30,000 miles on them.

LOOK INTO IT!!!

Instead of spending money on the IAC, just get some carb cleaner, some WD-40, and swab the f--ker until clean. The valve sticks closed and won't open when the throttle butterfly valve closes--easy fix--5 minutes tops. No money need be spent.

Cheers!

Good call on the sticky Dan. I have also seen posts about this a lot.

I had this problem too and it sucked, but for some reason it just went away after I raised my idle and then lowered it back to normal a few days later, o well....

IAC wouldn't cause it to die while cruising down the highway.

The topic says while cruising, I should have probably said decellerating, but I said that in my post and I've noticed a lot of people don't realize it dies when they get out of the gas while driving. [8D]

Mine would die at idle or in D or R. I just set up the idle set screw.
