cracked intake manifold

I'm bad at using the search function, but I did try. The previous owners of my car did not take advantage of the recall on the plastic intake manifold for the 4.6 and so I got the nice chore of dealing with this after the recall expired. My intake manifold finally cracked and of course the dealer wants to charge me $2000. No thanks. Should I buy the aluminum crossover replacement manifold separately then have someone else do it and save about $900, or is there a better aftermarket replacement (thats not plastic) for about the same price as the plastic w/ aluminum crossover one? Any recommendations? Thanks

Thanks. I'd like to know if the aluminum crossover replacement has the possibility of cracking again, as well.
Are there any other parts needed to put on the aluminum replacement, or is just a simple direct swap?

well the aluminum crossover wont crack, but the rest of the manifold IS plastic. my original intake manifold cracked in the back by the firewall. the back part isnt aluminum on the newer manifolds. so basically i got the ford one as a replacement and im praying for 3 years out of this one. there are others on the market though. professional products has an aluminum one is about 540 bucks. 5.0 mustangs and fast fords magazine did a review on it a few years ago and said it was good. trickflow also makes a really cool aluminum manifold, it resembles the mustang bullitt manifold and is around 800 bucks

+1 on doing it yourself.
Just take your time, be sure to have the necessary parts on hand before beginning and you'll be fine.
It's really not that difficult.

yea, these intakes are easy to do yourself.

Mine cracked and I replaced it with the aluminum crossover one from American Muscle ($200). Buy new gaskets too and install it yourself. Turn a $2 Million stealership repair into a $250 weekend fix.

I appear to be in the same boat you were. i bought a 2001 GT with 89,000 mi. on it at the beggining of the summer 2009. I now have 93,000 mi on it and found a crack at the thermostat. You indicated that there was a recall on the plastic intake manifold but it has expired. Can you tell me more details about the recall? Date it went into effect, experation date, recall number? I found a thread on Edmunds.com that indicated all 96 and up Mustang 4.6 GT engines were covered but the "Forum" was dated in 2003.

This happened to me a year ago in my 98 GT. If I can remember correctly, every intake manifold that I found, required a modded part. The best/cheapest/easiest way to fix it, is to just buy the OE intake manifold with the aluminum cross-over. It took my dad and me no time to tear it apart, and put it on and remember to replace the gaskets.
