Default Engine Swap? '97 4.6L SOHC -> 'XX 4.6L DOHC

Hey there,

I was doing some research on the internet regarding swapping a 4.6L V8 SOHC for a 4.6L V8 DOHC (GT to a Cobra, or atleast that's what I'd like to do). I already posted on another thread but I thought I'd start my own and see what I'd get.

I've got myself a 1997 Mustang GT (w/ Mach 460 "Premium" sound system) with a 5 speed manual, the only thing that isn't stock is the K&N Air filter. Not bad for a first car at 19 eh? I bought her for $3600 with dents and chipped paint. I've had her for about a year now, but I've always dreamed of having a Cobra! So I got to talking to my dad and he made the point that if I were to get a Cobra, my insurance would sky rocket! I think that if it were possible and cost effective that it would be something I would like to do, plus I get the benefit of learning how to work on my car, which in my opinion is crucial.

So, to sum it all up: Would a ('04?) 4.6L DOHC be hard to swap with my ('97) 4.6L SOHC? What necessary items would I be looking at besides the engine itself? New transmission? New gearbox (4.6L SOHC = 5spd, 4.6L DOHC = 6spd)? New ECU? Etc etc etc. (Forgive me if there is any ignorance, "I'm not stupid, I'm just young". Please respond with any advice!

Thanks in advance for any comments!

man, i've been there w/ya on that swap! i've got a 2000 gt sohc and was wantin to do the same thing. but after tons, and tons of advice. to me it's goin to be cheaper to build my sohc 4.6! to buy a decent 03/04 4v motor, its gonna run ya at least $7000 - $10,000! not to mention all tha little stuff. are you wanting more hp/torque, or jus to say u got a 4v motor? (which is very cool!) but basically it all depends on your funds $$$ and what you want out of it! but check around on here, there's alot of smart people that can surely help you out, which ever way you want !

Yeahh, I dunno... I took a look on eBay last night and saw 4v's are goin for about 6k. I would love more hp/torque, right now I'm runnin stock-ish @ 220hp 190-lb torque. I think it's more so the idea of having a 4v. I was up late last night doing some research after this post and a 2004 Cobra costs about 24k. I could get no more than $3200 for mine right about now. $3600 + $7k + $5-13k is still cheaper than that (and I get to keep my orig car!). I'm sure I can get myself a decent little 4v with low miles and for 13k a whole hell of a lot of upgrades. Plus I get the benefit of learning how to install all the junk myself. I just thought I'd see what other people though who actually knew something of the sort.

if you want a 4v buy a cobra or mach 1, if not take the cash you would have spent on the swap and buy a built shortblock, some trickflow heads and the forced induction of your choice. theres alot of modded 2vs that put out just as much power as a cobra if not more for thousands less.

What is your plan and budget with your car. How many miles on your car. As mentioned you are better off building up a 4.6 2v and can make crazy power than going 4v route. The sky is the limit is your budget

Ported 2v > than stock 4v imo.

TRADE MY Mach 1 HOOD + scoop set up for easy GT install (attached, no intake system necessary, unless you want it) for a COWL hood and maybe STOCK + CASH (but probably not). The hood is painted silver, in great shape, does need a color sand, but thats no biggie. Would prefer a swap for a silver one, but will consider many options. Need to trade due to changed plan on this car. RTP/Greensboro/Charlotte

I was thinking of going with a 4V as well on my 01' GT, and ended up sticking with a built 2V motor that Livernois did for me. I ended up with their forged shortblock, and their stage-3 heads. I went all out on my motor, but there are ways to save some money to make power. You can try finding a decent used supercharger to bolt on your stock motor, that would probably be the cheapest route to pulling the most power for your buck. I started out with a 2.1 Kenne Bell on my stock motor (01' GT 2V), I ended up with 438HP at the tires with a Bassani exaust system and a good tune. I am now finally at the point where I can actually do a built motor, you just have to take these things in steps withen your current funding. I wish you the best of luck in the choice you make, remember to take one step at a time withen your budget.
