Default MGW shifter rattle

Ok, this isnt for my car, it is on my friends car. He has a 04 gt with around 50k miles on it. He has had the MGW on it for around 30k of those miles and about 2 years. It was silent this whole time and then all of the sudden it developed a random rattle. The shifter shakes more when it does it and rattles. When it doesnt do it, the shifter is fine and makes almost no noise.

Anyone hear of this happening? Thanks!

Checked, just recently changed the fluid so I took the shifter out to fill the trans.

Never heard of this either, I haven't had any problems with my shifter. If everything is bolted correctly I'd ask cliffyk on here or contact MGW and ask them. MGW seems like they'd help you.

The plastic "glide button" on the bottom of the shift lever may have broken. I have seen this happen from age, and from not getting it properly inserted into the offset lever whwn installing the shifter--it will crack when the shifter is bolted down if it's canted in the offest lever.

mine just started doing it also. never installed the plastic cup on the bottom either and rattling was a recent development. gonna drain and install new tranny fluid this weekend ordered it yesterday. also ordered a gasket kit from AM...has a gasket for the base of the shift lever where it bolts to the shifter, and a gasket for the base to sit on the tranny. hopefully it quiets it down.

maybe you put too much or not enough fluid in? mine started after my accident and looking at my bill or whatever of all the repairs that were done they added a quart of tranny fluid...thinking maybe they added too much and thats the cause of noise. and coincidentally his fluid was just replaced also might wanna check that. but ill let u know if it helps me or not.

Is that the black cup on the bottom that gets inserted into the trans?

It was doing this before the fluid change. I put in exactly what mitchell told me to put in, which I think was 3.0L of mercon III non synthetic fluid, if I remember correctly.

Yup, are you sure it was installed and intact? I'd yank the shifter just to make certain--that's about the only thing associated with the MGW that could make the lever sloppy...
