I just replaced my power steering pump thinking it was whining but I'm still getting the same....frustrating to say the least. The whine (loud) starts immediately when the engine starts and gets louder as the engine revs. I can hear it over my freak'n exhaust!
It actually sounds like it's coming from the timing or tensioner. Any help would be appreciated. I've got to get rid of this.
Actually I think it's the AC. The pulley below the tensioner to the left.
Thanks!

I replaced the power steering pump on my old mustang only because of the noise and the new one didn't help things at all.
I'm not saying it isn't something else but ford power steering pumps are loud sometimes.

Thanks. I wish it was the power steering pump but the new one is quiet as a mouse. It sounds like it is coming from the a/c pulley near the tensioner. The whine was gradual at first now it's just all out.
you can pickup a stethescope from an auto parts store and place it on all of the pulleys and see if its an idler pulley or a tensioner or anywhere, it might give you a better idea of where the noise is coming from. is it a whine or is it like a belt squeal? does it only whine at idle or all the time?
Yeah it's all the time and it's a loud whine. The whine goes up and down as the engines idle changes. I'm almost positive it's coming from the ac clutch/pulley but I'm taking in to get checked out tomorrow.
Take the belt off start the car if the whine stops...Its a pulley or if it is still there you got bigger problems... Dont run the car very long without the belt though...

Yeah it stops when the belt is off. So, I can tell which pulley is causing my head aches by manually spinning it with the belt off? I didn't try that when I took the belt off but I'll check it out.

I give odds to the pulley right above the tensioner. It was bad on mine and gave that same problem. It's called an idler pulley.

It was the pulley directly above the ac pulley. The bearings were shot. Sheesh that little thing made a lot of noise......it was louder than my exhaust!
