Default 97GT auto, what can i do for performace?

I have a 97 Gt auto. Only thing that i have it k&n filter and flomaster 2 chamber exhaust. I wish the car was a 5speed but what can i do to get some more power out of this thing. I was thinking about 410 gear and headers but i really dont know what to do. I dont want to do anything like forced induction or N2o. I wanna just stick to bolt ons. Are chips really worth it to put in?? If i put in a chip how much hp do you gain? What about headers and exhaust???

4.10 gears are a great mod for the money. I'm getting mine tomorrow. Other mods will help with performance, but they won't be a SOTP difference like gears. I'd especially recommend 4.10's for an auto.

There are 2 things to consider when changing gears on an automatic. First is that you will need to change the reading the computer is seeing via either a custom chip or the SpeedCal from Dallas Mustangs. I have read that if the tire diameter or rear ratio is changed, besides just the speedometer being off it will also confuse the computer as the speed will not match the RPM's causing the computer to pump up the pressure in the trans to "force" a shift. The article warned of this, if severe enough the transmission may break due to the very high fluid pressure. So you need to address that. The second consideration is that the 96-98 Mustangs really do not breath that well at the upper RPM range. You have probably noticed that above 4500-5000 rpm it feels flat. (the 99 and up models have vastly improved heads and flow much better. So the point is that with 4.10's you will run up to the flat zone much quicker. But nothing short of nitrous or a blower gives you the SOTP response that a set of 4.10's would. Also figure you will be taching 3000rpm or more at 60 mph. So if you want to go with 4.10's make sure you take care of the computer and possibly a chip will help it breath.

I have a 96 GT with AOD, only with a K&N and ford racing wires. I ve searching for the best mod too, I want something that can make me feel a diference in performance. I just orderes a C&L set up with a 80 mm MAF. Also I am looking forward for a bigger TB, and a better plenum. For me thats a good start and not very expensive.

But i was also looking at a shift kit from transgo. ive heard great things about them. supposedly it will bark from 1st to 2nd and occasonally 2nd to 3rd at WOT. its supposed to give way quicker and firmer shifts... i dunno im just gonna try it out

If you just want to stick with bolt ons go with a Steeda Timing Adjuster and their Underdrive Pulleys. I bought these thinking I was staying N/A. Then I did the rebuild so I could put on a blower. Now I have no use for them. PM me if you're interested.

i had a 98 auto, i set her up with a transgo shift kit, 3.73 gears. pi heads intake etc, frpp headers, steeda timing adj. pro-m mass air, 70mm tb, custom x pipe and flows. consistant 13.7's.. never got her to the track before she got smoked but i think when it was all said and done she was running 13.4-13.7's with good tires
