well change the oil in the trans to syth. and work on your shifting some..I think maybe both are to blame...syth well shift smoother and won't have to got thur the warm up thing

Good call V. The way I drive that's all I run. I'm really hard on my cars.

Anyone have any problems with a "toothy" second gear?

I just bought this 2003 GT convertible USED with 9800 miles....

The "toothiness" happens more so when cold.....when the car warms up it behaves a bit more normally....still a bit rough, but not as toothy.....

Anyone have any ideas of what could be the problem???
ANY info would be greatly appreciated.....

Thanks,
Jeff
Yeah i used to have that problem..Those trannys are a piece of junk...and the clutch as well....ford should be ashamed of putting out such a bad product.

I have the same problem. So all i do know is let the car warm up and then drive it. It almost feels as it doesn't want to get into 2nd on a cold day. 00banditv8 you said the ford did a crappy job on clutchs. Well i have a problem maybe you could tell what it is. My clutch pedal vibrates in every gear. Now i am thinking either it is time for a new clutch or a pressure plate. What do you think?

I have a 2003 GT that I purchased brand new last spring, and I have the exact same "toothy" problem. Have had the problem in cold weather since I bought it. When it's cold it doesn't want to go into second, it doesn't actually grind, but the shifter feels like it's grinding. After it warms up there's no problems. Same deal too with the dealer. They say nothing is wrong. Maybe replacing clutch and shifter will help, but I don't know.

Huh? It IS grinding if the shifter grind..lol

It's the same way in many other GT's. My GT will not shift into 2nd or downshift from 3rd to 2nd when it's colder than 25 degree's out.

ok i got an 01 cobra like all yall with the infamous tr-3650 tranny, ill give you guys some reading material the dealership gives all ppl with our tranny's now for the grindin problem, first off the only change the tranny fluid on the first complaint, second time is the new upgraded shift fork. i sent my car in for complete motor to differential check-up

15669- mustang-tr-3650 cold gear clash - (dealer tech operations change fluid)
some 2001-2002 v-8 mustangs with a 3650 manual tranny built prior to march 15, 2002 may exhibit a clash/grinding sound during the first few miles of driving. to reduce this condition, completely drain tranny fluid and fill full with 128oz. (4qts) of motorcraft mercon atf using ford part #xt-2-qdx note: at full fill the fluid may not reach the bottom of fill hole do not overfill note: the full benefit of the fluid may not be realized (for the concern os clash/grind) until the new oil has been driven for several hundred miles.

i have alot more lil so called special service messages and tip if ya want me to tell ya private message me or email me me i have em for driveline clunk (yeah we all know that one), shift fork bendin, clutch noise, clutch vibration (99cobra ill tlk u later on aim) ok im sick of typin now later

Dan- what I meant was it feels like its grinding, but it doesn't make that abnoxious grinding noise like when you miss a gear (yes I'm a 1st time manual trans driver).

Cobra- thanks for the advice.
