275 is the tread width, not the sidewall. the biggest tire you will be able to fit under there comfortably is 26 inch tire.

as far as like a regular radial tire, 315/30/18 is prob the max.

hmmm why a 26? do you see the wheel gap on our cars? i measured and from the top of my 275/40/17 i have 3 and 3/4 inches of gap that is a freakin huge gap....i want to lower my car but i have to keep in mind longtube headers... so i will be lowering 1.6 front 1.5 back..... that will still leave a 2 inch gap how is it not possible to increase the tire size from 26" to 27 inch? so that i only have 1" gap? my handheld tuner can adjust the computer so that it believes the stock tire diameter is 27"

I dont think its a matter of the wheels gap measurement... it the measurement from front to rear of the wheel well... here is a pic of what i am talking about...

I still cannot imagine that even adding an inch to both sides would fill up the enormous gap. The reason I ask is that I found some 275/55/17 that i am considering purchaseing.
