it's a little heated sensor element with a cooled one behind it. The computer maintains it at a certain temperature (around 300 degrees) and depending on how hard it has to work to keep it warm (I.E. flooring it = more air past it = cools off more) it will tell the computer more air is coming in. Definitely a part you want to keep safe and clean, and is very delicate.

I thought it worked by measuring how much the element was cooling rather than trying to keep it the same temp, but either way is the same idea. the same wire at two different temperatures will have a difference electrical resistance, so they can figure out how much air is going into the intake by using the air temp and the resistance (or input power) of the wire to figure out how much air is going in.

depends how **** you are. Yo ucan do it every few oil changes, or every oil change. Make it a common routine and then you shouldn't have any problems with it getting dirty

it only takes like 2 minutes to clean the MAF. clean it when you do the air filter, it shouldn't be dirty if your filter is still working well.
