Under the hood cleaning...

RE: Under the hood cleaning...
k.. i dropped a car battery in a bucket of water with my ammeter (long story), and nothing happened.. so I don't really care when I spray my engine compartment down. keep in mind everything gets baked on at a couple hundred degrees pretty much, so just a simple spray usually won't do much of anything if it's been on there for awhile... so you're gonna have to scrub that sucker

i used a steam cleaner on mine, i left it run and i never had any problems, i'd spray it off with a hose too, but just don't focus the water near electrical boxes. and watch squirting off a CAI seeing as how the filter is exposed. u don't want water on them

the best cleaner/degreaser is castrol superclean hands down. all you have to do is warm up your engine, put a heavy spray of superclean on there and wait 20 minutes, go out and hose it off and it looks like new.

RE: Under the hood cleaning...
I learned this routine from a guy who runs a Detail Shop years ago and detailed my engines for years using this method without any problems at all and my cars that I have detailed have been, 95 Z 28, 70 Boss, 95 C4,01 SS Camaro and 03 C5.
Warm the engine up (hood closed) once warm turn her off and spray windex over the area's you want to clean I have used Mean Green on real bad area's. Let it sit there running again for 10 min with the hood closed, with the engine running spray off then turn the engine back off and spray armoral over everything, I stay away from hoses and belts. Water is really not going to hurt your engine unless of course you get crazy with it and hit the fuse boxes ect with a lot of spray for a long time.
Just try it you'll be happy with the results

Ya did alot of research and asked one of my auto teachers...he said whatever you do, do not use water! Yes it cleans it but on electrical stuff causes corrison alot quicker. Best thing to do is just use simple green or armor all *wipes*. Either of them will work just stay away from electrical connections!
