glowing brake rotors?
alright, this one, i'm not so sure of. a friend of mine has a 2002 Mustang GT. he just recently had 4.10 gears installed in the rear end. the day he got the car back, something was hanging up in his rear passenger side brake, and everything got VERY hot. he took it back to the shop, they took care of it, said it was something to do with a brake line, compensated him for it and all. well now a month or 2 later, he's having the same problem on the rear drivers side. except tonight, we noticed a weird noise, stopped the car and got out, and the rotor was glowing red. we really weren't driving the car very hard at all.
anyway, i have no idea what the shop may have done that might affect it, but he DID use his parking brake the other day (its an auto). i've heard of those rusting over time if they're not used and locking closed when you use them, but that was on drum brakes. i'm not too familiar with parking brake systems on 4 wheel disc brake cars. so maybe it's related to that?
we let it cool down on its own, since spraying hot metal parts is the worst thing you can do, and after that it was fine. but when it was glowing, it was like someone was constantly applying the rear brakes. do you guys have ANY ideas what could be causing this?

RE: glowing brake rotors?
It sure seems that the parking brake is staying on when its released, could be a bad cable, out of adjustment or could also be a caliper hanging up. If it got that hot, the rotor could be badly warped which wouldn't help things either. Try to get the rear off the ground, Safely, and check out each item, good luck.

My guess is he fouled up the park brake cable routing when he had the rear out. I HATE having people work on my vehicles, my experiences, even with the dealer, have not been all positive.

Best thing to do is to pull the calipers off and inspect them for correct operation..
Do you know if they tool the Calipers OFF of the car?? If so, they may have put them back on backwards, thus leading up to the incorrect P-Brake cable installation...
Also, if when they had the calipers, the guide-pin boots were damaged, or were not replaced correctly, and guide pins re-greased, then the pins could be seized in the caliper bracket..
You'll know this when you're trying to take the brakes apart...
If all of that checks out normal though, then it'll be time to check a few other things...
