Shifting into reverse
In my 99 cobra i just got i have had trouble shifting into reverse...according the the picture on the stick, it appears that reverse is below 5th gear and further to the right..when i try that it often grinds, is 5th gear closer than i think? When i try to bring it closer i often go into 4th...damn it is annoying..

RE: Shifting into reverse
Reverse should be all the way to the right and down.
It is grinding?? You are stopped and when you put the car into reverse it grinds you mean?
Everyonce in a while I have trouble getting my car into reverse, happened on both tranmissions, just wont go in to reverse. The solution is to put it in neutral (well you know what I mean, center the stick) let out the clutch, then push it back in and put it in reverse.
Fairly common on 5 spd cars, you just get it in a funny position and it doesnt want to go in.

RE: Shifting into reverse
You want to hold the stick all the way to the right and shift down. Sometimes it helps to shift up into 5th, then straight down into reverse. The reason you are having a hard time shifting into reverse is because the teeth on your reverse gear are shot. The only way to remedy the problem is have it replaced, which is costly. For the price of a rebuilt transmission though you could get a nice TKO that's a lot beefier than the stock tranny.

RE: Shifting into reverse
the gear is not necessarily "shot"...could be, but not necessarily.
Just keep the clutch in and go to 3rd then 4th before going into reverse or let out the clutch with the car out of gear, push it back in and try reverse again.
Yes, it's over as far to the right as you can go and down as far as you can go.
It's a pain in the a$$ but who wants to shell out the bucks if this works?
Good luck. I hope the tranny is still healthy.

RE: Shifting into reverse
I also have trouble getting in reverse sometimes in my GT. It just wont go into reverse all I have to do is put it in first a move forward a bit then it always goes into reverse with no problem.

RE: Shifting into reverse
The reverse gear does not have synchronizer like all of the forward gears. At times, it will be difficult to put it in reverse. If the car is moving, you most likely will not get it in reverse. If you are sitting still, and it still wont go into reverse, sometimes getting the car to roll a couple of inches, stop then place it in revers will work.
