Stick or Auto
I live in Colorado and I'm going to be buying a 99-01 GT here in the next week or so and was planning on getting a 5-spd, but with all the problems I've read about the Tremec 3650, and the T-45 to a lesser extent, I wonder if the auto would be just as much fun and less expensive in the long run. What do people think? I've always thought that a Mustang has to be a manual, but does the possible expense of rebuilding a tranny offset the fun factor? All I've read are problems, but thats the nature of forums, are the problems with the 5spds in every car or 1 in 10 or what?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.

Yeah get a 5-speed. I bet at least half the problems you've read about the manual transmission are because people don't know how to shift without abusing the snot out of their transmission, or they just bang the shifter until **** breaks inside the transmission. The only problem I've ever had with my T45 is the one I caused myself because I was too hard on it with the stock shifter. You really shouldn't have any major problems.

yeah wtf are you talking about? T-45 i can understand because it cant handle much power really, but youve actually heard less bad about it then the 3650? 3650>T-45 by a long shot. get an 02+. unless i see proof of some sort, i really think the 3650 rumors are just bull****

RE: Stick or Auto
My friend and I both have 2004 GT. He loves driving my car because its a stick and his is auto.
Auto is more pricey and really does nothing for ya in a sports car. Why even consider it?
Before ya say it I know youll say something or rather about convenience or something like that. Thats very true, when I really need to light a cigg or something it kinda sucks to have the manual but thats only a small percentage of the time.
I just put 4.10 gears in and I get to cruising speed (5th) at 35-40 mph so I dont even notice the fact that I have to wait till Im done shifting to be able to use my other hand.
Stick rocks... you have total control over your car, nothing feels better than to tell the car when to shift as opposed to just pressing the gas and letting it do it all at the "factory set best time".

Heres a link to a 44 page thread of 3650 problems, most of which are probably not due to crappy driving.

RE: Stick or Auto
So get a pre-2001 GT with a T45. They actually swapped to the 3650 mid-year in 2001, so even some 2001 GT's have a T45. Like I said before, my T45 has had no problems except the one I created, but since my car is almost stock, I can't tell you how it holds up to real world performance.
