I have a 96 GT 5-speed. Most of the time I go WOT from a stop it backfires almost all the way through first, but as soon as I hit second it dissappears. I have an off-road h-pipe and one of the 02 simulators has a cut in it, it used to turn the check engine light on and run super rich, then we put some electrical tape over the cut. That seemed to fix it, but I still backfires in first, should new 02 sensor simulators (mil eliminators) take care of this problem??

Backfires usually mean a lean condition.If you let it coast back down in first does it still backfire?Mil eliminators will probably fix the problem.

How can it be lean? I thought it was exess gas detonating in exhaust was the backfire, but explaing to me, please.
