Default Mustang vs. Camaro question

Now I understand that there is a big Mustang vs. Camaro rivalry. People talking about being able to beat them, but it seems to me that Mustangs, especially my GT are always having to play catch up with a Camaro. I've never raced one, but if they have LS1's and LT1's, dont those come stock with more power? It seems like the Mustang has to have F/I or better to even compete. Is this true, or is it just me? But don't get me wrong, I am Pro Ford all the way, I love my mustang, it just seems to me like a Camaro has the advantage from the factory, so why and how did this whole rivalry even come about if ford has to play chase with bolt ons and F/I and throwing lots of money into the car, then competing with a stock Camaro SS or Z28 (or maybe even the regular trim) and still sometimes not be fast enough?

Maybe I am completely wrong, thats just my impression. Could someone tell me a little about this?

Yea man Chevy/Pontiac always beat Ford I'm afraid to say. Lets take a look at the rivalries. The base model 6cylinder Camaro and Firebird are basically the same with the same engine, 3800 series motors. These models compete with the base 6cylinder Mustang. The Camaro/Firebird beats the Mustang.

The next class up is the Camaro Z28 and the Formula Firebird. These have the same engine as well, which is the 5.7L LS1. These were made to compete with the Mustang GT, and sadly they do beat the GT.

Lastly the top level of each model is the Camaro SS and Trans-Am. They both have the same 5.7L LS1 but with slight changes like a more agressive tune, better exhaust, etc. These push out about usually 25-30ish HP over the regular 5.7L LS1 found in the Camaro Z28 and Formula Firebird. These have been designed to compete with the Mustang Cobra. Sadly, until the 03 Terminator Cobra, the Trans-Am and Camaro SS have been able to beat its Mustang Cobra counterpart.

The reason the Mustang is most always falling behind is because Ford typically likes smaller engines with less displacement. Say the 5.7L V8 compared to the Ford 4.6L V8. Obviously the 5.7L is generally going to make more power. I guess Ford didnt care too much about this, since they outsold the Camaro and Firebird by almost 3 to 1 I've read. That has led to the cease in production of the Camaro and Trans Am in 2002. Thats my take on things, hope it helped you.

Rivalry has been around since the late 60s, after all the camaro was built to compete with the mustang. IMO the LS1 camaros are pretty bad ***, but the motor does have a larger displacement, and its fair to say that a mach 1 can compete with a camaro stock for stock. So no we dont have to have FI to keep up.

ford hasn't always been playing chase with the camaro/transam. chevy and pontiacs car sales, like said previously were way behind the mustang so in the last decade they went all out to hopefuly get sales up, making the camaro beat the mustang, so yeah it beats the stang stock for stock but the higher price and worse interior conditions lead to the mustang beating the camaro/transam as usual
