Starter or Fuel Pump?

Starter or Fuel Pump?
Every time I start my car, it takes a 5 second crank to get going. Someone told me previously to clean my IAC, which I did, but that has not fixed the problem. The car idles just fine, around 800 rpm.
My question is, what are the symptoms of a starter going bad and a fuel pump going bad? Are they the same symptoms?

RE: Starter or Fuel Pump?
Does the cranking get weaker as it's turning??
It could be a bunch of things.. Have you checked your battery's voltage before/after cranking?? Have you ever had your fuel pump replaced?? What about the condition of your fuel filter??

usually if a starter or fuel pump go bad, they just stop working without warning. The fuel pump may make a loud whirring sound sometimes for a while before it stops. It's possible that your battery is going. Does it sound like it is cranking strong or is it struggling to turn over? I would also do a general tune-up if you havent in a while... spark plugs. injector cleaner. also... there is some debate around here about seafoam, but i would run some seafoam through as well to clean any carbon build-up. What grade fuel are you using?

RE: Starter or Fuel Pump?
Thanks guys,
The cranking does not get weaker or sound like it is struggling at all. I had the battery checked yesterday and it is fine. I have never changed the fuel pump. I don't know when the fuel filter was last changed, and I run 87 all day. I did change my spark plugs (autolite platinum gapped at .054) and wires (frpp 9mm) a couple weeks ago.
Once the car starts, it runs great. No issues there. Maybe it's the fuel filter?
I really appreciate your help.

RE: Starter or Fuel Pump?
Hey folks. Got my fuel filter replaced and oil changed today ($80), and still I have the hard startup problem. Any other ideas? I trust the guy who did the work. He said there was no way of telling if the filter was bad yet, he said you just replace and bango, you got new. The guy checked my fuel pump, starter and battery and all was fine.
Maybe fuel injectors? Happy Thanksgiving.

you may just be losing your starter solinoid, which is slowly going bad and taking longer to crank the car
oh double check all grounds and connections, and the relay to see if everythings clean and secure
