I believe they sport 225hp, but they weigh much less and sport better factory rear gears.

Dan do you or anyone know they weight of 97 and 86 gts?

I read that those 5.0 motors only put out 215 hp the 4.6 came with 225 before 99. If you have an auto with flows and a CAI and hes got a stick, he might get you if he can drive but if he spins the tires too much I think youd beat him.

the 96-97 4.6 is rated at 215 and the 98 is rated at 225 then the 99-04 is rated at 260 and the rating change some over the years for the 5.0 but i think the 87-92 is rated at 225 then in 93 it fell to 215 i just guessing on some

I believe the weight of a 86GT is around 2900-3000lbs. I see around 3250-3300 for 98GT's. It varies on which site I go to. [&:]

The '86 5.0 is rated at only 200 HP actually, but that's just rated HP so who knows. My sister has a convertible '86 5.0 automatic, and I've driven it many times. It's bone stock except for Flowmasters. Comparing her car to my '96 when it was stock, I'd actually say it would be a driver's race. The fact that his car is a 5-speed and yours is an auto may make a difference but not sure how much. The 5.0 def. has a better low-end pull, but the 4.6 really rips up high. Just go for it and see what happens.
