What can I do about the pinging in my 03 mustang GT? Is it common or what? Also want to know if a replacement K&N filter will cause further pinging? If you have any ideas please let me know. I hate to take the car to Ford. They are not the sharpest tools in the shed...

Its called spark knock, and it hurts absolutely nothing. But if you don't want to hear it period, I agree with spiking the gas. You can use 87 octane as your primary, but every now and then, throw 3 or 4 gallons of 93 in that bad boy. Your computer is constantly trying to lean out the air to fuel ratio, as well as other ratios, so thats why it comes and goes.

dont tell someone detonation doesn't hurt anything. lets jack the timing up on your car to 20* and get some "spark knock" going and then letssee how much your engine likes it when you got some holes in your pistons or broke rods

like everyone says, spike your car with a couple of gallons of premium. it should go away. but now, drive until its almost empty and fill it up again with regular from a different station (than the original). if the problem comes back some time during that next tank then you should have it looked at -and yes, at ford since you still have warranty coverage, just become a PITA and they will do whatever it takes to make you happy.

if the pinging is loud - then don't run it hard, and get it looked at as quick as you can. even light pinging is bad in the long run, it even reduces power...never good.
