Default Cams?

Hey guys, I have a 00 GT and I was wondering if any of you modular guys have put cams in your cars yet? This is one mod I really want to do. Im not a mechanic so this would be my first time going into an engine and Im curious if I would be able to do this myself. I know Anderson Ford sells a cam tool so that you dont have to remove the timing cover. If any of you have done this details of the best way to go about it would be greatly appreciated.

Its a piece of cake, I've put cams in a 4.6 & and I've used the tool. Its a piece of cake - but don't follow the instructions that come with the cam tool they suck, and don't buy anything else from AFM cause they suck too. VT stage 1 NA cams are the best for you in my opinion. www.modularfordpowerhouse.com

Hey MD. How long do you think it would take someone who has never done it before to install the cams? Is it something that can be done in my driveway? Also how far do you have to dig into the engine to do it?

First time will take probably 5 hours. Second time probably 2 hours. The only "engine" part I had to remove to get to the cams was the valve covers. Yea you can do it in your driveway.

If you have a spring compressor and a couple more hours, (not to mention about 200 bucks) you might as well do valve springs and stage 2s.

Lots more work, but if you have anything over 50k on the clock I hear more and more people recommending it.

So how much in the engine compartment would I have to remove? I dont think I need new springs I barely hit 5k miles on my car.

Remove the intake hose, clutch cable from the firewall if you got a 5sp, plug wires and fuel rail, the little resevoir I think it was the washer resevoir above the ps pump, and the valve covers and have at it. If your using the AFM tool you'll need to have a vice to compress the lash adjusters down so you can get the rockers back up under the cams.

Thanks for the tips! It doesnt sound too difficult. Even though I dont know what lash adjusters are hehe. I would hate to F@$# something up on my new Stang though... Do you get detailed instructions on how to install them when you buy them? I have heard you talk about VT cams, are they better than comp cams? Also which set would you recommend and how much rwhp would they give me?

Comp cams have been said to have more play in them. I am unsure as to the truth of this.

BTW, it sounds like you dont have much experence working under the hood. While the cam job is not that difficult, I would not attempt it if this is your first time doing engine work. It is definatly not as easy as say bolting on a cold air intake or even putting in a aftercat.
