They have to sell it. Timing, camshafts, heads...all play a big role in the grade of gas you need, not to mention weather.

lol @ the ttt comment, so md it really doesn't matter if i use 87, 89, or 91 on a 03 cobra? i can use 87 but my spark plugs and 02 sensor won't last as long? thats my understanding from what you wrote.

No you gotta use premium, your car requires premium, unlike most everyone elses who requires 87. There are some occasions where carbon buildup in the combustion chambers in older cars will increase the effective compression ratio and in those cases maybe 87 will ping, so 89 may be required.

Like Dan said, compression ratio, ignition timing, and the overall setup of the engine dictates what octane is required to prevent detonation. Using higher octane than required will have negative effects on performance and longevity. The best thing I can tell anyone is to use the manufacturers recommended octane rating unless you've don't something to warrant changing - like increased timing, a poweradder, etc.

If your owners manual says to burn 87 then thats what to buy.Advanced timing ,cams ,or other mods may require higher octane levels.Using higher octane than recomended will leave extra deposits in the combustion chambers and on plugs. Then you have to clean them out with a good high power run and then never put high octane gas in again.

but a 03 cobra has a supercharger also as you know, is it because your ignition timing? and also i thought they only sold 87, 89, and 91 gas, so how are you getting 93? oh and LOL guess how much gas is out here in the west (san francisco), check this: 87 = 2.35, 89 = 2.45, and 91 = 2.55!!! and it's till raising, how much are you guys paying? thats so much were getting screwed out in the bay.
