Default Transmission swap question

I had to replace the tranny in my 96' GT. I found an almost new 97' Cobra T45 on ebay. When I switched them I realized the crossmember brace is a few inches further back on the Cobra trans than the GT. Does anyone know if there is a modified crossmember for doing this swap or am I SOL? I was trying to avoid cutting the crossmember brackets and re-welding them a few inches further up. I am also putting in a King Cobra clutch, B&M Pro-Shifter, and 3.73 gears (still a street car). Everything else went in fine except for the crossmember. I am new to this site and any help would be much appreciated.

ummm. I'm pretty sure 96-98 crossmembers are the same. Are you sure their is no possible way for it to fit? If you canet get it to work vist www.stangparts.com and call their sales line and ask for someone that does motor/tranny swaps and they will help ya out no problem.

I thought they were the same. A T-45 is a T-45 I thought? Could be wrong but like I said, everything should link up.

They are almost identical except the Cobra T45 has the mounting point for the crossmember a little further back than the GT T45 and there is a 7 tooth drive gear for the speedometer on the Cobra versus an 8 tooth drive gear on the GT. This allows for deeper rear end gears. Other than those 2 things they are identical.

why didnt you get a 6-speed, i mean you are putting in a new clutch and a new shifter, you could have made your car a 6-speed. now that is a MOD to your car. and if you know so much about cars what are you doing working at KMART? i know a guy that put a Z06 engine and 6 speed trans in a S10- WHOA!!!! and would the new cobra 6-speed trans fit in a 96?

That's pretty funny yellowstang. I don't know that much about cars, just from reading about them. I should have gone for a 6-speed, but it seemed like it would be more involved and not just a direct fit(even though the Cobra trans wasn't an exact fit either). After the fact, I read that a 97-98 Cobra transmission has a slightly different trans mount location than the 96-98 GT's (Even though they are both T45's). As far as the KMart thing goes, that is just my first initial and first 4 letters of my last name. I could only hope of working there !!! (it would be such a dream job)[:'(] I took the advice of 97stangv6 (thanks very much) and called mustang parts specialties, inc. and they said the cobra had a different trans mount that would make the swap work. I hope this is all I will need because I really don't feel like cutting and welding the brackets on the framerail.

I was going to suggest a different transmission mount. That should be the only physical difference. The T45 transmission itself is identical itself across all platforms, except like you said the drive gear. The new mount should be all you need. Good luck!

T-45 from 1996-98 GT are different than the Cobra Mustangs. The transmission mount point is moved further back for the Cobras and as well as a 8 tooth drive speedometer gear. Cobras T-45 are equipped with a 7 tooth speedo gear. In 1999 all T-45's were changed to the Cobra specs. Why this was not done earlier is not understood. As for the swaping out of the trans mount, it wont make a difference.. 95 to 98 year mustangs use the same trans mount on the t-45 as well as the automatic trans.. The part about the speedo gear is right and will need to be changed.. You will also need to purchase a 96-99 cobra trans member for the swap as they are offset a little to make up for the 2 inch difference or so... This will make your swap possible... Hope this info helps....
