Honestly IMO if i were you i would just stick to the mechanic... they will usually get it done fairly cheap, and a lot cheaper in the long run if your driving down the road and that *** end locks up... Just my 2 cents..

I did mine...need a micronmeter to measure shims, a magnetic dial indicator to measure backlash or buy an expensive tool that makes it easier. If you want to replace bearings (pinion bearing, axle bearings and such) you will probably need a press or a blow torch to heat up bearings to remove them. To install the bearings you can stick em in a small oven for like 20 minutes and then with some plyers you can grab em and they should slide right into position. Anyways, to do the install right, it takes some time (some people do em in less then 5 hours cause they are more experienced) but for the first time you need to be patient and make sure everything is done right. Basically if you have the cash, get em installed...if you like messing with your car and have time and patience, do em yourself.
