The viper spec trans will allow you to run a more agressive gear ratio than the TKO while keeping the RPM the same.
The viper spec has the .50 overdrive, while the TKO has a .64 or .68 final (5th) gear (depending on model). The viper 56 is ALOT more expensive, 3000+ according to the d and d website.
As we talked about earlyer, you have no major differences in the transmissions ratio wise until 120+ MPH (coming out of 4th). The gear ratios are for all real intents and purposes identical until after 4th. If you get the more expensive viper spec you will havea much more useable 120+ (or with a 4.10 rear gear maybe 114? Whatever 4th tops out at) MPH, espcially with your centri as the extra 5th gear will keep it in the powerband better.
Basically ask yourself, am I going to run a 4.10 or steeper gear? Am I interested in 120+ MPH accleration?
So far as the strip, I am not sure that even with a 4.10 you would want to have to shift to 5th (with the 56) as it is still a overdrive gear, and usually you want to try to stay out of overdrive (anything above 1:1) in the 1/4 mile. The .7x overdrive of the 56 might still be steep enough to keep you acclerating correctly, but with no personal experence I cannot say for sure.

RE: Anyone with a T-56 Viper Spec Tranny with 4.10s?
What final gear are you gonna run, a 4.10?
Is it mainly a street car, or more for the track? With your projected power levels (built shortblock etc etc) are you going to keep the 4.10? What tires are you gonna run on it ?
There are lots of things to think about. Another is that even if you end up with a 4.10 and end up running out of gear at the top of the track (with your WHP level your dammed sure gonna run out of 4th with 4.10s) you can always switch to a different height tire.
There alot of things to think about, not the least of which is cost. Like I said, the most important thing is to figure out (dunno how) if your going to be able to shift into 5th on the 56 during the 1/4 mile and still keep up accleration. On the TKO, your gonna run out of 4th gear with a 4.10 rear gear around 114/116 MPH or so, and that isn't gonna be enough MPH for your power level... hell I trapped 114 MPH with just 420 WHP.
Thats a big reason I run a 3.73.. that and its mostly a street car, and the car has traction problem enough (it did anyway lol) with just a 3.73 gear.

If I go 6spd I'm going 4.30s, if I'm going TKO 5spd I'm going 4.10s......
Hey whats that Gear Ratio Calculator??? I KEEP Forgetting to save the damn thing to favorites.

Ohhh yea.... My Tire sizes for just regular driving are gonna be 275x45x17 in the back.....
But my Racing set up is going to be 27x10.5x15

RE: Anyone with a T-56 Viper Spec Tranny with 4.10s?
The real sticking point then is going to be your gear vs MPH on the track. With the TKO if you run a 4.10 you WILL be running out of gear and have to swich to 5th at the top of the track, which is going to be costing you time and MPH.
Espcially with a centri you simply cannot pull correctly thru the .6x overdrive gear in the 1/4 mile when shifting from a 1:1 gear like 4th. The RPM falls out of the best window and it slows ya way down.

I think its all gonna depend on your tire size, trans you go with, and your WHP output.
IMO 4.30s are going to be a LOT of gear with your WHP level your planning on running. On a strip only car its one thing, but on a car that goes on the street... man thats alot of gear. Gonna need some STICKY tires to ever have a chance of catching traction.
What are you supposed to trap? I think I top out 4th around 120/122 MPH.. if you max out 4th thats somewhere around a mid/low 11 second time.
If it was me, I would choose the trans and then drive it with the 3.73s and see how it ran. Then I would choose the final gear ratio you need based on experence.

RE: Anyone with a T-56 Viper Spec Tranny with 4.10s?
Yea Brian decided that 3.73s and a 27 inch tall race tire would be just enough to get me through the traps at 4th gear. But I think your right on that part though. Do the tranny swap and see how I do the next time at the track to see if it is even necessary to do the new gears.
