Everything you wanted to know about 3650 but were afraid to ask. I was actually doing some research on my own car. Got this annoying as heck rattling in 5th gear only and only when accelerating. It goes away after the tranny warms up. It shifts just fine and acts normal. I was told its the after market shifter (MGW) but I can tell its coming from the tranny. I changed the fluid last week and used Royal Purple but it did not make a difference. I read somewhere that Tremec recommended less than the 3.8 quarts of fluid that Ford recommends because this amount could cause noises to occur. I haven't found anyone else that has the same issue.

The fifth gear chatter is normal. The factory shifter just deadens the sound. Everyone and I mean EVERYONE with a short throw experiences some sort of gear chatter. It's just the nature of the short throw beast. If you want to lessen (but not eliminate) the chatter, try a gasket from CobraBob (do a google search) and get a MGW boot. It will improve by leaps and bounds.
As a matter of fact, I actually worry when I don't hear it. It's a constant reminder that I need to down-shift and floor it!

I did use sealant MGW gave me instead of a gasket. I did order the MGW dust boot when I ordered the shifter but I did not use it. I used the whatever was there. The MGW is better?

I also used the black RTV MGW supplied. Switching to the CobraBob solid gasket helped alot. As far as the boot goes; yeah, it is THAT MUCH better. Not only does it quiet the shifter down, it makes the shifts much softer feelings. It's kinda hard to explain, but the material is much more amiable to the MGW shifter and it form fits nicely. I willing to bet my bottom dollar that you will enjoy the shifts more with the new boot. Hell, its a 5 minute install. Give it a try!
