...you said the 'sound' changes volume as speeds change, meaning it gets louder/softer as speed increases/decreases...I'm just guessing the wind resistance may have an effect on that thing thats causing your problem.

Did you remove your air silencer? [8D]

I don't think it's wind resistance... I wasn't going that fast when it made noise.

Nothing was done to the car recently to cause it... something broke or wore out.

Ok.. try checking your driveshaft where it connects to the the tranny and then to the diff. look on either wheel and check for leakage that would signify a worn out axle seal... which could cause you to lose gear oil and make a whinning noise.. jacking the car up would help the process a lot. -Chris

Are you SURE it doesn't matter with gear change? Mine does it in first like a mo fo, then it switches and still does it, but not as bad. Can you get a video for us?

p.s. SIG!!!

These are some hillarious suggestions. However, I will bet $100 American that it's an axle bearing. Good luck Red.

i'm still betting it's rear-end related. i know dragging brakes don't usually whirr but that might be worth checking out too

Hell Hath Freezeth over...Red is posting in the Tech section [8D]

Seriously though, I'd go with the output/tail shaft on the Tranny. You may need to put a sleeve on the driveshaft where it goes into the tranny. Excessive play could cause that. When it's up in the air, the drive shaft should have a little bit of play (side to side) where the u-joints are at butthepart that goes from theu-joint retainerinto the tranny should be solid.

Another thing to check would be the fluid level of the tranny/rear diff if possible..

Axle bearings could be checked by swerving the car left/right and if the noise gets louder on one side, then it's time for new bearings.. They're not too bad to change, just remember torent /borrown a bearing puller and a good slide hammer...

Do you get any chassis vibration at higher speeds??

My car is making the same sound and just found out yesterday that I have a knot in my front passenger tire. Could this be where the noise is coming from?
